Gamma Explained: How to Stop Your Projector from Looking “Washed Out”

Have you ever set up a 4K projector, only to find the image looks flat, milky, or that dark scenes are just a blob of black ink? Such overtly intense or too dull images are not necessarily due to hardware failure, but rather to a Gamma setting. What is the role of Gamma when you are just trying to view content?

Here, Gamma is not a math equation that we learnt in school. It is just a “translator” between the video signal and how bright the pixels actually glow by controlling the mid-tones, which are crucial gray areas between pure black and pure white. This affects overall contrast, even shadow details in games. By mastering Gamma settings, you will see the differentiating factor between having a “true cinema experience” with EBL technology rather than just viewing content that seems flat on a “big TV” because of Gamma 2.4 rather than the standard 2.2.

The Core Concept: Why 50% Signal ≠ 50% Brightness

To make images look natural, Gamma “bends” the light signal to match the way human vision perceives light. The Gamma setting is just like an audio equalizer, but it's just for the light.
